What are fibres?

Fibres consists of non-digestible carbohydrates and lignin that have physiological effects in humans. Total fibre is the sum of the amount of dietary fibre and what is added to it. This to distinguish fibre present in food (dietary fibre) and fibre that has been extracted and/or synthesised (functional fibre) and taken as a supplement to the diet.

What does fibre do?

Fibres is the collective term for indigestible components found in plant foods. They ensure good bowel function and smooth bowel movements. Foods rich in fibre contribute to smooth digestion. With fibre, for example, you can prevent and reduce constipation or diarrhoea. They also contribute to prolonged satiety, and can reduce the risk of bowel cancer.

What foods contain fibre?

Fibres are found in a wide variety of foods. Examples include whole-grain cereal products such as whole-grain bread, rye bread, bulgur, whole-grain pasta, brown rice, oatmeal and muesli. In legumes fibres are found in products like brown beans, chickpeas and lentils. But fibres are also found in vegetables, fruit, nuts and potatoes.

Different types of fibre

What are the different types of fibre? Fibre can be divided into two types. First, water-soluble fibre. These fibres are found in vegetables, fruits and legumes and have beneficial effects on the bacteria in the colon. On the other hand, there are the water-insoluble fibres. Non-soluble fibre is mainly found in cereal products such as wheat.
