The hibiscus flower, from Hibiscus sabdariffa, is an annual herbaceous shrub of the Malvaceae family, commonly known as Roselle or Karkadé.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, China and Thailand are the largest producers, but Sudan is the source of the world’s best quality roselle. Biosylx’s Hibiscus whole dried flowers come from the Kordofan region, and to a lesser extent the Darfur and Blue Nile region.

It is used in various food applications such as herbal tea, juices, and snacks. It is also well-known for its medicinal value and is therefore used in nutraceutical applications as well.

Description

Once the flowers fall off, the bright red calyces swell and are harvested by hand and dried.

Biosylx’s Hibiscus is primarily a dried calyx, available in several grades:

  • Whole dried flower shell (HPS) 5-8mm
  • Crushed and sieved dried flower Coarse Cut (Siftings) 3-5mm
  • Fine mechanical powder (Tea Cut) 1-2mm

Food Application:

Biosylx’s Hibiscus has a raspberry like flavour and a prominent red pigment/colour.
